Das HONDA in seiner langen Geschichte schon vielfach ungewöhnliche Wege im Design gegangen ist, beweisen Motorräder wie die winzige Bootsmonkey ebenso wie die CB750 als das erste Supermotorrad. Was aber die HONDA Entwicklungsabteilung in den frühen 80er herausbrachte, war zwar bis ca. 1982 nur ein kurzes Intermezzo, ist aber in der Art ein bis heute faszinierendes Motorrad. Die HONDA Motra CT-50 J.
Obwohl die Japaner ja bekanntermassen sehr viel Zeit auf der Arbeit verbringen, ist anscheinend der Wunsch in der Freizeit mobil zu sein und über Stock und Stein reisen zu können, hier besonders ausgeprägt. So lieferte HONDA neben den klassischen Trial-Maschinen, den ATC Dreirädern auch eben die Motra, die mit einem speziellen Geländegang den steilsten Berg erklimmen sollte.

Die MOTRA verfügt über einen Stahlrahmen, steht auf 10 Zoll Rädern und hat den bekannten liegenden 50 ccm Einzylinder Viertakt-Motor mit ca. 4,5 PS bei 7.500 U/min sowie 6 Volt Technik. Mit ca. 75 kg ist das Bike zwar ein kleines Schwergewicht und wird weitläufig wie die CY 50 “Eisenschwein” genannt, ist aber konzipiert, weitaus größere Lasten zu transportieren. Mit dem 3 Gang Getriebe plus zusätzlichen weiteren 3 Gang Vorschaltgetriebe kann die MOTRA bis zu 23 Grad Steigung überwinden. Mit 1,25 m Randstand bei 1,65 m ist die MOTRA schon fast kein Minibike mehr, bietet dafür aber einer Person und Gepäck viel Platz. Die MOTRA ist nur in Japan verkauft worden und nie in Europa homologiert worden, was große Probleme bei einer eventuellen Zulassung bereiten kann. Serienmässig wurde die MOTRA in Navy Green im Military Style oder in freundlicherem Yellow lackiert. Im Internet finden sich aber viele Beispiele aus Fernost für radikale Umbauten.

Obwohl das Bike nur kurz gebaut wurde, ist das Design der MOTRA so charakteristisch, dass Jahre später in den Modellen RUCKUS, ZOOMER und besonders in der BIG RUCKUS PS 250 es von HONDA wiederbelebt worden ist.
